Lou cannot be held
responsible for your
SANITY if you

Or, to put it another way   Who the hell is Lou ??
or, to put it another way   Who cares ??
or, as Beethoven said   Who ??

Lou - The Ancient One
This is Lou when he's happy
You should see him when he's not !
Lou was born in Dublin in 1956. From a very early age he was interested in music and started to learn to play the guitar when aged 11 or 12. In general his musical education and appreciation began in the 1960s with the music of
  • The Beatles (which gave him a love of melody and harmony; and of musical diversity - eg the Beatles 'White Album'), then in the early 1970s with
  • Rory Gallagher and Taste (rock and blues guitar playing); soon after that with
  • Eric Clapton and Cream (long guitar solos), and after many many more years finally, in the early 1990s, with the music and incredible playing of
  • John McLaughlin who is a guitar virtuoso (who made Lou realise that after 20 years or more playing the guitar he was a mere feeble, pathetic beginner), which gave him a love of acoustic 'lead' guitar playing.

Although he is usually seen playing an acoustic guitar he is first and foremost an electric lead guitar player (blues and rock) and included a jazzy blues guitar improvisation instrumental (Track 11 'Springtime Blues' on his 1st CD - On A Saturday) because he gave into temptation and decided to 'show off' his talent - as you well know, there's no point in having hidden talent unless you can show it off !! As Lou says of himself "I've never lost it". But most people never even knew he had ever found it !!

In truth Track 11, 'Springtime Blues', was only included as a result of problems Lou had with his voice and thus couldn't record the vocals for some tracks. It was only then that Lou decided that he should, and must, include a lead electric guitar solo track.

In fact, his 'show off' guitar playing (very fast acoustic guitar fingering) isn't included on this, his first, CD 'On A Saturday'. Hopefully there will be a suitable track for inclusion on his second CD - if it comes to pass (if he sells enough of his first CD !!).

He started songwriting and composing at 15 when he was still in school (he can still remember writing songwords at the back of the class - 'no better place to concentrate !!') - he's a disgrace and should be ashamed of himself. Over the years he gradually amassed a collection of original songs of every type, flavour, and genre but, apart from the words, they only existed in his head and nowhere else.

In the 1970s and 1980s he was in a few 'no-name' 'no-go' bands but usually ended up playing either the rhythm guitar or the bass guitar. In only one of those bands did he play any of his own compositions (Dancing Gang and The Hooley). It was only when he moved to Achill that he began to play as a 'one-man-band' using the acoustic guitar and had some very enjoyable and successful gigs. The gigging was greatly curtailed by the problems with his throat (at this point in the story tears should be streaming down your face . . . . NO, not from laughing !).

For awhile he tried recording some of the songs using a 4 track cassette recorder but found it practically impossible - the final results, although musically good, were muddy and indistinct. And, even worse still, he was limited to very few instruments.

Then, in 2002, he discovered recording software which could be used on his computer (his 3rd love) which gave him the freedom to be as creative as his little brain wanted to be, while sitting at home in front of his turf fire. Now, Lou says, he has no excuse for not recording every song he ever wrote except his lethargy (bone lazy), his day jobs (part time teaching computer applications, and part time slave in a fish farm), and some annoying problems with his hearing, his throat and his chest (looks like he's on his way out! - buy the CD in case he 'pops it' soon !! - they might become a collectable item then).

April 2006: It turns out that Lou has had problems with his thyroid gland (hypothyroidism) which caused the health problems over the past few years - especially the vocal and throat problems. He is now taking a tablet a day and hopefully within a few months he will be leaping around like a young man of his 50 years and hopefully, before the end of 2006, he will be back in action playing gigs to screaming fans! (as to why they will be screaming is unknown!)

I think we can expect more from Lou in the future - unless he goes more senile than he is now and forgets the rest of the songs he wrote. Unfortunately, these health problems have curtailed his public playing and he is rarely seen on stage. (Don't cry onto your keyboard - you may electrocute yourself). His last gig was in November 2004 and the huge multitude of fans are eagerly awaiting his recovery and his triumphant return (wake up Lou, stop dreaming !!).

8th July 2006: Lou finally played a gig, the 1st one since November 2004 - the voice was good - the crowd were good - the night was good. Lou is back in action. Today Achill . . . . . tomorrow - the WORLD !

In order of importance Lou is firstly a philosopher (and part-time hermit), then a musician (singer & songwriter) and finally a computer nerd (of sorts). At present (year 2005) music is a hobby and a labour of love - he still has to work for a living. Hopefully sometime in the future, before he gets to retirement age, he will be able to earn enough through his music and his indescribable dashing good looks  ;o)  and talent  8=D  in order to give up the day job and concentrate on writing and recording music.

The fact is that Lou is so simple and contented that he considers that merely having the CD produced and available to the public is success enough. Each and every individual sale of his CD will be just more success upon success. All he hopes for is that people will enjoy his music as much as he does. If so then let him know. Use the CD Review Form as he cannot read your mind (maybe that's a good thing!!).

Please also remember, this is an independent production with very little advertising or promotion - so if you like the music TELL OTHERS and SPREAD THE WORD - don't keep it a secret.

But it's time to finish this depressing and boring saga and epic of the details of Lou's life - most likely, by now, you're at an open window on the 20th floor considering jumping just to get away from Lou. Poor Lou, he has had to live with all this!! He can't escape.
Aaaarrgh . . . . . .

Bye !
