The Slane - The Manual Turf Cutting Machine
Otherwise Known As . . . The Weight Loser!
Getting a machine to cut turf makes things very easy for some people but it takes away the enjoyment of working on the bog, especially when the weather is dry and sunny. Also, it is a very productive way of exercising and getting fresh air. Working outdoors, at a gently pace, is a very good way of spending some 'quality' time.
A slane is very much like a spade except that it has an extra blade at right angles to the main blade. The slane in the picture is a right handed slane - with the extra blade on the left hand side of the main blade. You use your right foot to push the slane into the bog.
Then you lift the cut turf from the bog and 'scatter' or spread it out to dry in the long hot summer (we all wish we had).
