This is a music piece which was NEVER written. It was NEVER composed. It just . . . . happened. Simple! Understand??
I didn't think so. Here's how it all happened.
In the early 1970s I used to play lead guitar and practiced with a school friend (Liam Slattery) who used to play bass guitar. When we parted company and went our different ways I ended up not playing lead guitar for years. I decided (1979) to tape myself playing rhythm and then I would be able to play the tape back and play lead guitar along with the tape. The rhythm piece was generic - a musical cliche. There was no originality involved at all.
The only difference was that whereas usually in the past I had played straight blues rhythm in this case it was a jazzy blues type rhythm with a different beat and slightly different chords (9ths). I only ever played along with the tape about 2 or 3 times. I never considered it a 'composition' - it wasn't a composition. I forgot all about it.
When I had a throat infection (it was actually a symptom of long term hypothyroidism) around christmas 2004 and my voice was out of action (thankfully I had nearly finished all the vocal recording for the first CD) I decided that I should add a guitar track to the CD because ultimately I am a lead guitar player and it would be ridiculous of me to bring out a CD without some real guitar playing on it (I consider Wait and Dancing Gang lead guitar solos as ok but not really 'letting go', or being very creative).
So I dug out the old tape just to remind me of the rhythm sequence. I recorded the bass and drums to get the timing and then recorded the rhythm guitar and then using my old 1973 cheap Fender copy guitar and a foot pedal (for some sustain/reverb) and played/recorded the lead guitar solo. It was improvisation - nothing was 'worked out' in advance - whatever happened, happened, and that was that. So the song was composed as it was being played - or is it the other way around! The rest is history!!
(To be honest I had no idea as to how good or bad it was until I was mixing it and changing some of the drums and bass guitar - then I realised it was something I could be very proud of). THIS is Lou. The GUITARMAN.
