A Clamp Of Turf In Saula, Achill, Co Mayo
When the turf is dry it is either put into a shed, or bagged and left outside in the weather, or it is built up into a clamp, about 6 foot high, as in the photograph.
The sides of the clamp are fairly neat so that the clamp doesn't start to fall down. It is a lovely sight around Achill, though less and less people go to the bother of building a clamp.
Unfortunately, the tradition is dying out, along with the older generation.
