Achill Island
(pop rock) - 3:49

Are you coming, are you coming, to the land across the sea
Feel your spirits rise, your soul revive, peace of mind is there for free
Cross the bridge on to the island, leave behind the city rush
Magic moments for the taking, simple things can mean so much
Oh, oh, Achill Island.

Take the road between the mountains, and discover Dooega bay
Try some fishing, from the rocks there, mackerel glistening through the spray
Look across the north horizon, Slievemore climbing, sides are steep
In the shadow of the mountain an empty village lies asleep
Achill Island is my home.

Smell the turf, see the black bog, like a blanket on the land
Then in Saula, see my neighbours, greet them with a wave of hand
We still have the empty places, with the views of sheer delight
Where the land is as nature's canvass, and the paint is nature's might
Oh, oh, Achill Island.

Walk along deserted beaches, push your toes deep in the sand
Feel the wind from the wild Atlantic, it tingles on your face and hands
See the mist caress the hillside, and feel the rain that fills the air
Wash away all your daily worries, for soon the weather's will be fair.
Achill Island is my home, Achill Island is my home.
Oh, oh, Achill Island, oh, oh, Achill home.
Oh, oh, Achill Island, oh, oh, Achill home.

Song Information

The music for this song was written in the early 1970's as a very slow melodic air (that is why the harmony structure is strange - if a 3rd voice is added it becomes a bit like jazz harmony). Unfortunately I always came up against a brick wall as regards the words. I only ever got as far as the first line:

'Are you coming, are you coming, to the land across the sea'   and could go no further.

It was only years later, after I had moved from Rathfarnham, Dublin (on the east coast of Ireland), to Achill Island (on the west coast) in 1994, that the rest of the words 'fell into place'.

Achill Island is a wild beautiful place, which unfortunately is becoming over-run by holiday housing as a result of decisions made by stupid politicians, looking after the interests of their wealthy backers.
